Conference Quick Hits Week 7: ACC, Big 12, Big East

Share

conference-challenges-mid-season2011At the mid-way point, scoochnew, kst8no1, decampo42, slwlion, crzyfrk and orangebleed23 lead the charge for conference prediction titles. Find out which ones have opened up leads and which ones should be looking over their shoulders at a field of contenders vying to make a move heading into the back half of the season.

ACC Challenge

Leader: scoochnew has simply dominated the ACC Challenge through the first half of the season. The Iowa fan has led all but the first week and his 49-9 record commands a 15-point lead. He has two first place finishes in Week's 2 and 3 and four Top 10 finishes. Real separation came came after Week 5 when he was one of 37% to pick Duke to beat upstart FIU en route to a 7-1 record. The 12th place finish increased his lead from 5 to 14 ratings points.

scoochnew is in his third season and finished No. 25 in both the 2009 and 2010 ACC Challenge. He won last year's 2010 Pac 10 Challenge title.

Top Contenders: slwlion trails scoochnew by two games with a 47-11 record. He won Week 1 then finished 3rd the following week thanks to picking unpopular Miami over Ohio State. He finished ranked No. 14 and No. 16 in '09 and '10. The Penn State fan also has an SEC Challenge title to his credit.

No. 3 JohnnyBeGood08 trails by 20 points but is still big threat to come from behind. He has already won two conference titles and is a frequent contender in the ACC contest. In the past, he's finished Nos. 2, 8, 10 and 11.

Current Leader: scoochnew, IOWA; 210.36

Big 12 Challenge

Leader: kst8no1 has put together the most impressive first half predicting effort that we have ever seen in any weekly contest. The Kansas State fan is an amazing 44-1 predicting the ten team Big 12 which is 98%! That's right, kst8no1 has been perfect every week except Week 2 when he missed the second most missed result of the season when Iowa fell at Iowa State. Shame on him! While it can't be confirmed, it's probably safe to say no one fan or college football expert has a better record predicting Big 12 games in 2011 through the first seven weeks. That's six 1st places in seven weeks! And the one blemish? A 3rd place 4-1 finish. It doesn't get much better than that.

kst8no1 has two conference prediction titles including one in the Big 12 Challenge but they both came four plus years ago. With a four game, 21-point lead he might be well on his way to a second Big 12 Challenge title and third conference title.

Top Contenders: sonyawc will have a tall task ahead of her with a four game deficit but there is a lot of football left and most Big 12 teams are about to go into the heart of league schedules. Top teams like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas and Texas A&M will start playing each other while the bottom half teams will start playing one another. That means there will be plenty of opportunity for difference in picks and a four game deficit could be made up very quickly. sonyawc has four perfect scores of her own and only trails in confidence points by only six.

At Nos. 3 and 4 nitemare64 and skid are newcomers to the Big 12 contest and are right behind sonyawc matching her with a 40-5 record. At No. 5, bobbyd finished just outside the top ten the last couple years.

Current Leader: kst8no1, KSU; 177.96

Big East Challenge

Leader: decampo42 tied scoochnew for the lead after a 7-0 Week 4 then slid into an outright lead by by less than a point with a 2nd place 4-2 record in Week 5. While a 4-2 record doesn't sound like a week you'd take a lead with it was a tumultuous week predicting Big East games and only those who picked some upsets rose to the top. That week, you had to finish in the top ten just to keep your head above water. decampo42 and the minority selected a Rutgers OT win over Syracuse on the road which turned out to be a springboard for Rutgers since. The Miami fan was also one of a handful to pick Marshall to upset Louisville. The following week, he finished in a 4-way tie for first but a setback in Week 7 has him clinging on to that lead, once again, by less than a point to soochnew.

Contenders: This has been one of the more competitive conference races with No. 2 scoochnew positioning himself as the frontrunner to challenge decampo42 for the Big East prediction title. The Iowa fan has five top 10's through seven weeks and matches decampo42's 36-8 record. The only difference separating the two is one lone confidence point. scoochnew has plenty of success in three seasons participating in conference contests with a No. 3 finish in 2009 and a Pac 10 Challenge title last year. In addition, he's currently No. 1 in the ACC Challenge, No. 4 in the Pac 12 Challenge, No. 9 in the Big Ten Challenge and No. 8 in the SEC Challenge. Needless to say, scoochnew is starting to figure out these weekly contests.

No. 3 sonyawc leads all contestants in the confidence points category and, at 35-9, trails the two leaders by just one game. Through the first seven weeks, she has three 1st place and one 2nd places and tied for a brief lead in Week 3. The Iowa State fan has stayed in contention with some big upset picks along the way. In Week 1, she was one of four to pick South Florida to knock off (18)Notre Dame then turned around in Week 5 and picked Pittsburgh to beat those same (16)South Florida Bulls. Just like she did during last year's 7th-ranked finish, expect sonyawc to stay at or near the top in the second half.

At No. 4, keep an eye on NUtball who trails by ten points but has shown some savvy picking Big East games in the past. He's finished No. 8 twice in 2007 and 2008 but this is his best first half start. He also has a Pac 10 Challenge trophy sitting in his trophy case.

Current Leader: decampo42, MIA; 123.55
